ESDU STRUCT 02.04.01
Buckling stress ratios for plates under uniform compression and shear.
Abstract:
ESDU Struct 02.04.01 applies to flat or curved rectangular plates and gives an empirical graph plotting a compressive stress ratio against a shear stress ratio. The former is the ratio of the compressive stress at buckling when the plate is under combined compression and shear to the buckling stress when it is under shear alone. The latter is the ratio of the shear stress at buckling when the plate is under combined compression and shear to that when it is under shear alone. Two curves are given, one for flat plates that is noted to apply also to the mean of the data for curved plates, and one that represents the lowest results for curved plates. It is suggested that the large scatter in the data obtained on curved plates is the result of using thin plates for which the initial irregularities would be of the order of the thickness. The stresses at buckling under compression or shear alone must be obtained from other ESDU documents taking account of the appropriate edge conditions. For flat plates ESDU 72019 gives the buckling stress for compression and 71005 for shear, and for curved plates ESDU Struct 02.01.50 gives the buckling stress for compression and Struct 02.03.18 or Struct 02.03.19 for shear. A worked example illustrates the use of the curves.Indexed under:
