ESDU 18008
An overview of bonded joint design
Abstract:
ESDU 18008 presents an overview of the design of bonded joints that are suitable for use in structural and non-structural engineering applications. This Item considers the selection of suitable adhesives and adherends in bonded joints, and compares these joints to other fastening methods, such as bolted joints or welding, that are currently available. Notes on the examination of loads and stresses in the bonded assembly and common modes of failure in conventional bonded joint designs are given. A summary of bonded joint design, including a list of advantages and disadvantages of adhesively bonded joints is also provided along with a worked example.
This Data Item is part of the 'Stress and Strength' Series. ESDU is currently seeking new Members to join the Committee that oversees that Series.
