Estimation of rolling manoeuvrability.
Abstract:ESDU Perf EG8/2 considers the manoeuvre of generating a rate of roll and then bringing it back to zero when a certain angle of bank has been attained. It gives equations and curves that allow the time for the manoeuvre and the ratio of that time to the duration of the initiating aileron input to be determined. The method assumes the only significant rolling moment from the motion of the aircraft arises from the rate of roll and that aileron deflection varies continuously parabolically with time (and periods of roll-generating and reverse-application, which may not be equal, have maximum deflections proportional to the application periods). Data required are the derivatives of rolling moment due to rate of roll and of rolling moment due to aileron deflection, the inertia in roll and the maximum aileron deflection. Two worked examples illustrate the use of the method.
