ESDU STRUCT 02.04.05
Initial buckling of flat plates under compression, bending and shear.
Abstract:
ESDU Struct 02.04.05 gives a graph from which the initial buckling may be predicted of a simplysupported isotropic rectangular plate under shear combined with a linearly varying direct stress on one pair of opposite edges. Such a stress distribution would arise from the combination of a direct load and bending in the plane of the plate. The graph plots the initial buckling stress in the edge to which no direct stress is applied against the initial buckling shear stress. Both stresses are nondimensionalised by buckling stresses for other loading conditions. The direct stress is nondimensionalised by the stress in that same side at which the plate would buckle if no shear were applied and the buckling shear stress by the stress at which the plate would buckle under shear along. Those stresses required for nondimensionalising may be obtained respectively from ESDU Struct 02.04.04 and ESDU 71005. Three curves are given for values of the ratio of the stresses in the two sides to which no direct stress is applied of 1, 0 and 1. The value of 1 applies in the absence of bending and the value of 1 implies tension in one edge and compression in the other; that curve and may be used, however, for stresses giving values of the ratio up to 1.3. Combinations of stresses that lie below the curves correspond to conditions for which the plate does not buckle. The data apply to a plate with a material having a Poisson's ratio of 0.3. Worked examples illustrate the use of the graph.Indexed under:
