ESDU 18003
Form factors for flanged sections under combined bending and axial load
Abstract:
ESDU 18003 presents form factor curves to calculate the maximum permissible bending moments for sections that are symmetrical about the bending axis and Z-sections. For sections symmetrical about the bending axis and Z-sections constraint to bend about the bending axis, the presence of axial loading, in addition to bending, reduces the permissible bending moment. An estimate of the effect of an axial load acting in this sense on the permissible bending moment of Z and other symmetrical sections about the bending axis may be made by use of the curves presented in this Data Item. For other polygonal shapes ESDU 90004 and its computer program can be used to calculate the maximum permissible bending moments. The form factor in this Data Item incorporates the Ramberg-Osgood formula to define the stress-strain curve of the material.Indexed under:
