ESDU Structures Design Collection

The ESDU Structures Design Collection is a set of design information consisting of validated ESDU methods, data and software and respected complementary information.

The Collection contains:

  • The ESDU Structures Series
  • MMDH - Metallic Materials Data Handbook
  • MMPDS - Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization Handbook
  • NACA/NASA references from the ESDU Structures Series

The NACA/NASA references and MMPDS have not been validated by ESDU but contribute to a comprehensive collection of design information and can be used alongside ESDU methods for comparison and analysis to solve design problems. They also provide a possible resource in areas not currently covered by ESDU.

Content Overview:

ESDU Structures Series

The 'Structures' Series give comprehensive, rigorously evaluated information for the analysis of both metallic and non-metallic lightweight structures such as those used in aerospace. Data are given on elastic or inelastic stresses, strains, displacements or buckling loads under static loading. They range from general data (metallic material properties, principal stresses and strains, and failure criteria), with application regardless of component form, to the analysis of specific components in metallic, compound (sandwich) or composite structures (beams, struts, panels, stress raisers (stress concentrations) and joints).

MMDH

The Metallic Materials Data Handbook (MMDH) originated as a UK Defence Standard and is the British/European counterpart to MMPDS. It presents design data for ~500 British and European Aerospace specification materials Physical, mechanical and characteristic properties, along with composition and other data, are provided for aluminum alloys, copper alloys, heat resisting alloys, magnesium alloys, corrosion resisting and non-corrosion resisting steels, and titanium alloys. Supporting documentation on the derivation and use of the design data, property relationships and standardized test procedures are also provided. Tables of related specifications give information on the relationship between the various international and national material designations and the specifications in MMDH.

MMPDS

MMPDS (formerly Mil-Hdbk-5) presents design data for a large number of US aerospace specification materials. The data presented include composition and physical and mechanical properties. The mechanical properties consist of design allowable values for tensile strength, tensile and compressive proof stresses, Young's modulus, shear and bearing strengths et cetera. Graphical data covering heat factors and fatigue, amongst other things, are also included, as is information on joints and fasteners. In essence MMPDS is similar to MMDH and the two handbooks are complementary, the former covering US aerospace materials, the latter covering British and European specifications.

NACA/NASA References

NACA/NASA Reports, Technical Notes and Memorandums referenced within the ESDU Structures Series and the Analysis and Design of Flight Vehicle Structures text are available in this Collection.
