Elastic buckling of thin-walled unstiffened circular cylinders under bending, axial compression and internal pressure.
Abstract:ESDU 84006 provides data for the prediction of the extreme fibre stress at buckling of a cylinder under a bending moment alone or under combined bending moment and axial compression. The effect of internal pressure on buckling stress for cylinders under bending is included. The data are given as curves obtained by correlating a large number of experimental data drawn from diverse sources and therefore take account of realistic irregularities. The influence of the non-linear or Brazier effect due to progressive ovalisation of the cylinder cross-section under a bending moment is considered, and an equivalent extreme fibre stress calculated at collapse. A practical worked example illustrates the use of the data.
