ESDU Stress Concentrations Segment
Data are presented on stress concentration effects arising from discontinuities of shape, or from inclusions or because of local load distributions.
The configurations treated include the following: single reinforced and unreinforced holes in plates; two unreinforced circular holes flat plates; geometric discontinuities in bars, strips, rods and tubes; double radius fillets in shouldered shafts in torsion; a rectangular notch in the edge of a wide flat plate in tension; stress concentrations at grooves for retaining rings or seals (with notes on design against fatigue); axially loaded lugs with clearance-fit pins; three-dimensional elastic stress concentration factors for a plain or countersunk hole in a wide plate subjected to tension, bending or pin loading. Data on interaction and stress decay are also given for selected cases.
A detailed guide to the available data is also included.
