ESDU TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM
Asphalt pavement surfaces - Surface temperature and decelerating forces
Abstract:
This Technical Memorandum outlines the development of a mathematical model that can be used to determine the coefficient of decelerating force of an aircraft tyre operating on an asphalt surface, which considers the influence of surface temperature on the value of the coefficient.
The model incorporates the micro-surface sharpness parameter, F1, which is described in ESDU TM 174, entitled "Correlation of the micro-texture sharpness parameter F1", the rebound resilience of the tyre-surface interface (which is a function of surface temperature), and the effective rebound resilience of the asphalt surface material.
Values calculated using the model are compared with data derived from experimental measurements on eight separate surfaces using a British Pendulum. A strong correlation is observed.
