ESDU 18004
Form factors for angle, tee and channel sections under combined bending and axial load
Abstract:
ESDU 18004 presents form factor curves to calculate the maximum permisssible bending moments for sections that are NOT symmetrical about the axis of bending. For sections such as Tees and Channel-sections, the maximum permissible bending moment is reduced by the application of the axial load when that load acts so as to cause failure of the outstanding leg. This Data Item applies strictly to the case when the end load acts in a direction such as to cause failure of the outstanding leg. If the end load acts in the opposite sense the form factor is slightly greater than the value given by this Data Item and, for that, Data Item ESDU 90004 computer programe can be used to obtain more accurate results of the end load and maximum permissible bending moment that may point to failure of the flanges as the critical case rather than the outstanding leg. The form factor in this Data Item incorporates the Ramberg-Osgood formula to define the stress-strain curve of the material.Indexed under:
